

You can also add new email id under Accounts>Set up an account>Email as seen in the screenshot below.

When you launch Thunderbird for the first time, it will ask you to enter an email ID and password. To take a backup of Gmail emails, go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP inside Settings and enable POP for all emails. Also, there is a portable version available for you to save all your data on a pen drive and view it offline. There are many email clients available for desktop, but I will be using Thunderbird for this guide. Let’s get a bit serious and look at some of the ways by which you can take a backup of emails on Gmail.
